OUR STORY

Homareya is a warm and welcoming culinary space in Long Beach, California, where traditional Japanese craftsmanship meets the free-spirited creativity of California. Founded by Kyoto-born chef Yoya Takahashi, the restaurant reflects his deep respect for heritage and his passion for expressive cooking.
The name “Homareya” combines Yoya’s given name—Homare—and the Japanese word for “home” (家, ya). It embodies his desire to create a space where guests feel at ease, as if invited into his own home.
While sushi remains Yoya’s core discipline, Homareya offers a wide range of dishes— from binchotan-grilled yakitori to inventive Japanese comfort food— all prepared in a live, open-kitchen style that engages the senses and celebrates the beauty of everyday Japanese cuisine.
At the heart of the restaurant is a commitment to fermentation. Koji is cultivated on-site, and house-made miso, soy sauce, and mirin are thoughtfully incorporated into select dishes, adding depth, nuance, and a sense of time to each bite.
Homareya is built on pride—pride in ingredients, technique, and people. It aspires to be a place that feels like home: warm, honest, and quietly nourishing. We invite you to experience a plate that tells a story— one that begins with koji, follows the rhythm of the seasons, and honors the blessings of the land.
